HISTORY

โ€‹

At Hallam Fields Junior School, we are committed to fostering a deep chronological and coherent understanding and appreciation of History amongst our pupils. We believe that History is our window to the past, enabling us to explore the many amazing events that have occurred in Britain and around the world, but also the events we need to learn from so we can all do better in the future.

Our intent is to provide a rich, engaging, and ambitious curriculum that inspires curiosity and a love for learning about the past. We aim to equip our students with the necessary skills to think critically by questioning historical narratives and considering multiple perspectives in order to develop reasoned arguments. We aim to promote inclusivity to ensure that all voices are included in the historical narrative. We aim to encourage empathy byโ€ฏdeveloping an understanding of the human experience throughout time such as conflicts, social changes and significant events. Finally, we aim to equip our pupils with skills such as teamwork, research skills and communication that they can use not only in History lessons but across the curriculum and throughout their lives.

Our History curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure that it builds both substantive and disciplinary knowledge progressively. Each lesson has clearly defined subject knowledge which is delivered to our pupils each lesson. Key concepts such as trade, empire, monarchy are taught throughout the themes of Society and Community; Exploration and Invasion; Power and Conflict and Disaster and the complexity of the concepts is increased as they are revisited throughout the year groups.

At Hallam Fields Junior School, we follow the Grammarsaurus History scheme which uses an enquiry-based approach. Each unit is comprised of one main question which pupils work towards answering each lesson through smaller, sub-questions. We provide cultural experiences such as trips out and having visitors into school in each year group to enrich our curriculum further. We also celebrate events and mark anniversaries such as Black History Month, LGBTQ+ History Month, Martin Luther King Day and Remembrance Day at a whole school level.

The impact of our curriculum is pupils who love History! They are able to articulate their understanding about the past, who look forward to, are visibly engaged throughout and enjoy their History lessons. Our thorough curriculum ensures that our children have a deeper understanding of the world they live in due to developing an understanding the lives of those who lived before them.
